ABSTRACT: The definition and delimitation of metropolitan areas has been the focus of many geographers and other specialists for quite a few decades. The complexity and diversity of the methods and techniques used, and the differing attitudes of those working in this area have brought considerably different, and often controversial, results. The EU has introduced a tool, Integrated Territorial Investments (ITI), to support study in this area by motivating EU member states to define their metropolitan areas. This article will introduce the methodological approaches related to the functional integration of regional units and to inter-regional relations, used with ITI to delimit the metropolitan areas in two large cities, Brno (monocentric system) and Ostrava (polycentric system), and will compare the results with those achieved using our own method. Through a comparison of the results this article will examine the efficacy of the methods previously used and their possible transferability to studies of metropolitan areas with completely different settlement systems. Finally, this article will consider whether a unification of previously fragmented approaches is possible.

APPLICATION OF ARC HYDRO AND HEC-HMS MODEL TECHNIQUES FOR RUNOFF SIMULATION IN THE HEADWATER AREAS OF COVASNA WATERSHED (ROMANIA)

Carina STRAPAZAN, Mihai PETRUȚ

DOI: 10.21163/GT_2017.121.10

ABSTRACT: Lately, computerized hydrologic models have become an essential tool not only for a better understanding of the hydrologic cycle but also for a faster problem solving in hydrology, such as the ungauged catchments. Since Covasna river, which is a left tributary of the Black river, is monitored only by two gauging stations, an approach for runoff modelling at the ungauged outlets within the catchment, would be extremely beneficial. Thus, the main purpose of this study is to conduct a test of the ability of such a simulation modeling system for flood prediction within the upstream catchment area of Covasna river. The one chosen for carrying out this study, HEC-HMS, is known to be a reliable model with reasonable approximations. Throughout the research, ArcHydro and HEC-GeoHMS extensions are used to delineate the watershed, and to obtain the hydraulic length, the CN grid and other parameters. This study is also a solution for the problem of long simulation time of the model, by following first, the work flow implemented in ArcGis 10.2 through Model Builder

TEMPORAL SAMPLING CONDITIONS IN NUMERICAL INTEGRATION OF HYDROLOGICAL SYSTEMS TIME SERIES

Constantin Adrian ŞARPE, Ionel HAIDU

DOI: 10.21163/GT_2017.121.09

ABSTRACT: This paper verifies the sampling conditions of discharge and net precipitation series, subjects of integral transforms. The time step influence on the discrete numerical integration of the hydrological system input and output signals was analysed. Our approach is based on the sampling theorem and on the basic properties of the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and of the Fourier integral transform. Arguments from conceptual models of river basin rainfall-runoff are considered to underlie our time series sampling. The application of the integral transform methods like DCT in the Instantaneous Unit Hydrograph (IUH) parameters computation needs to fix the summing limits before designing the numerical procedure.

AUTOMATIC GENERATION OF HACHURE LINES

Zsolt MAGYARI-SÁSKA

DOI: 10.21163/GT_2017.121.08

ABSTRACT: Creating hachure maps was a well-known and widely used method in cartography for relief representation, which has served mainly military purposes. With this method gradients are represented instead of elevation. Starting from the 20th century, hachure based representations were abandoned and replaced by contour lines based representations. However the apart graphical aspect of hachure maps and the fact that they emphasizes the slope characteristics, makes them useful in various fields (ex. archeology, education and museology) even today. In the reconstruction process of a historical map with hachures the hachure lines hardly can be digitized especially due to their enormous number. In this paper we present a possibility to recreate hachure lines using GIS methodology respecting their construction rules as much as it’s possible.
